Upper School Ethics Bowl Team Finishes Second in State Competition
The Kent Place Upper School Ethics Bowl team finished second in the New Jersey Ethics Bowl competition, narrowly missing the title by one point. Led by captains Naina Bhardwaj ’25, Charlotte Grushkin ’25, and Dvita Bhattacharya ’25, Kent Place competed against 13 schools across the state on 15 Ethics Bowl cases.
Kent Place was victorious through the semifinal round, competing on topics such as peer pressure on social media, the ethics of feeding dogs vegan dog food, boycotting businesses, and posing restrictions on tourism. Dwight Englewood’s Ethics Bowl team secured the win.
“I was very impressed by the contributions of every member of our Ethics Bowl team,” said Lisa Goldman, one of the coaches. “We saw many teams that featured one student and relegated the other members to the background. In contrast, everyone on the Kent Place team contributed helpful insights and persuasive commentary during every round. This was a real team effort.”
“Though finishing in second place by such a slim margin was tough, I couldn’t have been prouder of our KPS team and the manner in which they competed against some very tough competition throughout the day,” said Karen Rezach, Director of the Ethics Institute and a coach. “This year’s cases posed some interesting ethical quandaries, and the discussions that we had for the past few months prepared our team to handle very challenging, philosophical questions from the judges. Kent Place School’s team again proved itself to be a leader in ethical thinking.”
